Students for a Sustainable Stanford gathered support for drought-tolerant native landscaping on campus through an online petition in February. More than 800 students, faculty, staff, and alumni signed the petition, which urged campus leaders to consider replacing grass landscaping with vegetation that requires less irrigation.

In response to the petition, Stanford’s University Architect/Campus Planning and Design office met with the student leaders to discuss opportunities. Students for a Sustainable Stanford supplied the office with a list of local and drought-tolerant plants they would like to see featured more prominently on campus, and the architect’s office agreed to incorporate the group’s feedback in planning the landscaping around the soon-to-be-constructed School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences building.
