Leaders from 14 universities converged at Stanford this spring to discuss opportunities for the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) to continue to provide valuable leadership in increasing sustainable practices on college campuses. During a two-day retreat, the AASHE board discussed ways to improve local, regional, and international partnerships to help foster sustainability practices as fundamental to education.

As part of its mission to promote sustainability in the higher education sector, AASHE has developed the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) to measure and compare the sustainability performance of colleges and universities. Stanford earned a Gold rating from STARS in 2014.

AASHE serves as a connecting organization to provide resources and motivation for campuses nationwide to improve their sustainability performance. During the retreat, members of the board toured the new Central Energy Facility to learn about the advances that Stanford has made in addressing climate change and evaluate whether these suggest any opportunities to enact change at their schools.
