In the spirit of leadership by example and best-practice sharing, Stanford offers public tours of its new Central Energy Facility, which opened on April 1. Offered weekly and by special appointment, the tours provide an in-depth look at the facility and the technical innovations that contribute to its overall sustainability. The facility has drawn attention not only from local groups, but from sustainability leaders nationwide.

Visitors have come from the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the French embassy, the German consulate, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of California, Google, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, NRG Energy, Excelon Energy, Sonepar (France), Mines University (France), San Francisco International Airport, and others. Stanford has provided advice and support to many universities to follow up on interest generated by the tours, and is willing to share its energy-modeling technology to help others analyze their capacity to implement a similar program in different environments.
