The Stanford Student Green Fund provides up to $30,000 a year in one-time grants for student-led projects that improve campus sustainability. Through this program, Office of Sustainability supports student leadership by providing funding, guidance, and opportunities for hands-on experience and networking. Awardees for 2014-15 projects include the following:

  • d.School Scrapworks Graduate Students received funding to audit and track food waste being produced by Stanford’s main dining halls. Through their research, the graduate students identified significant opportunities to reduce food waste, and associated food and labor costs, through improved communication between executive chefs and kitchen staff. Their findings have the potential to save the university $1.8 million annually.
  • Engineers for a Sustainable World were given funding to lead workshops where students built their own pedal-powered bicycle light systems. By participating in the workshops, students who used their systems supported both Stanford’s safe biking priorities and its goal of reducing hazardous waste, such as disposable batteries.
  • Residential & Dining Enterprises Student Housing interns received a grant supporting a new video iteration of the “Sustainable Living Guide” booklet. Their six-minute video featured faculty, staff, and students speaking on the ways they embrace Stanford’s culture of sustainability. This video will be shown during orientations for both new students and staff.
